Your wedding day will be one of the most photographed days of your life (unless you model for a living lol), and it’s totally normal to feel a little nervous about being in front of the camera. Whether you’re pro at taking selfies or camera-shy (or just shy in general), there’s a difference between casual photos/selfies and professional wedding photography. I am here to let you know that looking natural and feeling confident in your wedding photos is easier than you might think (woohoo!). Here are some tips to help you chill, be yourself, and get those amazing photos you’ll treasure forever.
1. Choose a Photographer You Vibe With.
Your comfort level with your photographer is key to looking relaxed in your photos. When you trust and feel comfortable around the person behind the lens (hopefully that person is me..hehe), it’s easier to drop your guard and let real moments unfold (I know this from personal experience and from what clients tell me). Meet with your photographer beforehand (I love grabbing a beer with clients!), hop on a call, or book an engagement session so you can get to know each other and build that trust. The more we get to know each other, the better :) I mean..imagine your friend taking your photo, you'd 100% feel more comfy with them than a random stranger! (I don't want to be random lol, I honestly want to be your friend, FOREVER!)
I often work with couples who tell me they are “terrible at photos" (I know you wouldn't believe this after seeing my portfolio). After we spend time laughing and walking around during an engagement session or go out for a beer, they tell me they are already comfortable with me and feel super relieved about that (you know who you are). On their wedding day, each one of these couples were total naturals.
2. Focus on Your Partner, Not the Camera. Your wedding day is about the two of you.
Instead of worrying about where to put your hands or how to stand, focus on your partner. Laugh together, share a quiet moment gazing into each other's eyes and just VIBE. Those real interactions are what make your photos feel alive and natural.
3. Just Keep Moving
Standing stiffly in one spot can make anyone feel awkward (not gonna lie, this is me every time I get my photo taken lol I always have to remind myself to MOVE). Movement creates natural expressions and fluid body language. Walk hand in hand, spin each other around, dance, be silly with each other if that's your thing or simply play with your bouquet or accessories. Little actions make a big difference in how relaxed and genuine your photos look. The more you think about how you're posing, the harder it may be because this might get you stuck in your head and just stuck in general (hence the "keep moving").
4. Breathe and Slow Down
It’s easy to get swept up in the pace of the day (you've been thinking about your wedding timeline now for how long? This is normal), but take a deep breath and be present. Before portraits, pause, take a few slow breaths, and let yourself feel the joy of the moment. A calm, centered mindset will show in your face and body language. The simple motion of breathing honestly makes for those chill raw shots tbh..!
5. Embrace Imperfection
The magic is in the in-between moments: a burst of laughter, a tear sliding down your cheek, a gust of wind catching your veil (LOL Sam remember when yours actually flew off your head right before the storm and one of your guests caught it like a ninja during your ceremony?). Don’t worry about looking “perfect” in every shot because those unplanned moments are often the ones you’ll love most. My favorite shots tend to be the ones where the subject isn't even looking at the camera - they're just doin somethin'!
6. Practice Ahead of Time
If you’re nervous, practice taking photos together before the big day (not selfies). Your engagement session is the perfect time to do this! It helps you get used to being in front of the camera and lets your photographer understand what feels most natural for you. Each time I have photographed an engagement session, it has allowed me to really understand the couple's vibe in front of a camera and how I can make them more comfortable and also helps me keep in mind specific things people like when getting their photos taken (this goes a long way).
7. Trust the Process
Remember, it’s your photographer’s job to make you look good. We know how to guide you, find the most flattering light, and capture you at your best. Trust that you’re in good hands and let go of the pressure to control every detail (Let it go, let it goooooo).
My goal is for your wedding photos to feel like you. Joyful, emotional, and REAL. By choosing the right photographer, focusing on each other, and letting go of perfection, you’ll look natural and lovely.
